I have very often wondered how can America, as large as she is, be destroyed in one hour? I believe I have found a way that is very plausible as well as possible. Given all of the various elements I have discovered any one of these in itself would be a catastrophic event, however, the likelihood of just one of these occurring without triggering other aspects seems very slim. I will try to explain each aspect separately to give the full picture.
First there is the Midcontinent Rift system which is huge, runs through several states, is quite deep and the rocks surrounding it contain various compositions of lava. This thing dwarfs the New Madrid fault line and is basically a tear right through the center of our continent. This is the only rift that is known not to turn into an ocean or body of water. Nature abhors a vacuum, that is a scientific fact and we have a huge one running right through our continent.
The Midcontinent Rift System sits in the center of two seismic zones. The NMSZ is southeasterly of it and The Great Lakes Tectonic Zone is to the North/Northwest of it. Now my thought is that is either of these faults become active there is more than a good chance that our country could be split in two with water from the Great Lakes and the Gulf filling the center. That is the least of the scenario's, by the way. In another scenario I question whether this rift could shift and start a chain reaction to the fault lines surrounding it?
There are several prophecies from various people that speak of our continent being divided. But even more importantly, so does the Bible.

nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto
her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
Either of these alone is bad enough but if all three were to erupt at once its easy to assume that the quake would be a magnitude of 9 or better. If there is lava composition of the rocks there then we can also assume there are currently inactive volcanoes as well. If this giant wakes up it could reek havoc of biblical size proportions.
I have also recently come across a new fault line just discovered on the East coast as well. This fault stretches from N.Y. to Alabama and could cause an earthquake also with the right mix of ingredients and the eruption of these other faults maybe just the thing to rouse it. Now as if that were not enough...have you ever heard of the H.P. Gas Reserve? It contains oil and natural gas and this reserve runs across our entire continent and not too deeply in some cases, I might add. There are areas that are as shallow as 50 feet in which just a plane crash could cause devastating effects. It even runs off of our coastlines...where they are so fond of drilling.
What they do is force water down into the area containing the oil to push the oil out and up and fill the void left with water also as seen in the example below.
Now the kicker is that the U.S. farmers have pumped a huge amount of the water out of the H.P. Reserve also, due to years of drought. This has lowered the natural water level by 100 feet and created another void. The vacuum created by this loss of water pulls the water being replaced by drilling down into the water aquifer. Because of the loss of water from the reserve the companies have to use 2-3 gallons of replacement water for every gallon of oil/gas extracted from the earth. Eventually this too seeps down to the aquifer and what is left is once again a void. Once again this void creates a vacuum and ends up pulling air (oxygen) into the reserve from above ground.
When the oxygen to gas ration reaches 14% the mixture becomes volatile and could explode if ignited. Amix of 21% literally turns that area into a full fledged bomb just waiting for the slightest spark to blow.
Now take a good look at that map and notice that our ENTIRE continent and shoreline sits on this reserve. You can clearly see that if one area were to ignite there would be a series of explosions that would literally encompass all of the U.S. and then some. Plus the areas that remain full of oil and gas would continue to burn until there was nothing left. Remember the burning oil fields of Iraq after we bombed them and they lit the oil so that we could not have it? They burned for months...till there was nothing left.
Another interesting fact is that ALL other places on earth that have been blessed with a natural gas and oil reserve...the gas is hundreds of feet below ground and not subject to the potential dangers of this one.
